Terrawise Construction put their new piling equipment to the test
23-Mar-2011
Over the last two years, Terrawise have been carrying out extensive research in the development of piling equipment, for the use of driving tubular piles.

During this research Terrawise could not find suitable piling impact
hammers on the world market, that could easily interchange with commonly
used Road Rail Vehicles. After numerous meetings and discussions with leading hammer manufacturers, the decision was made to commission the design of a purpose built impact hammer. |

The ‘Impact Hammer’ has been designed and built to a specification
written by a consortium of experienced Engineers, from various sectors
within the Rail Industry including designers, plant specialists, piling
contractors and Network Rail. After extensive trials and tests, the hammer was finally commissioned in December 2010, and although it has been working on various projects up and down the country, the full potential of the hammer has recently been realised on the Manchester Metro project. |

Terrawise were contracted to drive varying lengths of tubular piles
ranging from 5m to 8m, along the Oldham to Rochdale metro line. The
piled foundations were installed to carry structures supporting the
overhead line equipment. Using the Terrawise Side Grip Vibration Hammer (Movax) and the newly developed ‘Impact Hammer’ Terrawise are now able to install an average of 11 piles in a typical 8 hour shift. |
